The Northern Irish champion celebrates BBC's top sports success with individual and team accolades.
Seconds before his name was called, a trepidatious worry darted through his mind. He revealed he was concerned, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver once more."
"This has been a great night for golf," the champion said. "Golf was celebrated in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and with any luck we can build upon that."
In this instance, however, there was no late twist. The result was decisive, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to savor a blockbuster evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were named the year's best team.
Constant Motion
Instead of opting to stay for the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already plotting his next sporting adventure. After played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was heading straight back to Florida.
"The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind 24 hours," the golfer noted. "My plan is for a little bit of rest over Christmas."
Hunger for More
That said, McIlroy stated he has no plans to rest on his laurels, despite completing the career grand slam earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a several strong seasons in me," he remarked.
"Additional major championships, tour championships, team competitions, that's the aim. But provided that you feel like you can keep progressing and have the hunger, that's the essential part."
Squad Celebration
Elsewhere, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the collective trophy, also lauded golf's remarkable night and his great friend's individual success.
"These become the memories that will live with us indefinitely so to get the people's vote for that is truly special," he stated. "Seeing Rory receive that award, I think he has earned it so much."
When reminded that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood chuckled before joking, "We're not the most popular are we!"
Future Goals
His goal is to finally win his initial major championship next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "Provided that you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to improve," he noted.
Club Support
Before McIlroy left, one final question arose. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be persuaded to do it again after his new triumphs?
"Provided that they quit letting in multiple scores in Manchester," he answered with a grin. "There is progress. There's a hint of optimism around."
Following a remarkable year, it's little surprise that he is seeing the upside.
