The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
