The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.

The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

His passing follows less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
