A popular South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation battling entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the 40-year-old presenter was approached by three suspects, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The reason behind the shooting remains unclear and no one has been arrested have been made, as per the official statement.

Details of the Attack

Authorities said that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a premises in the vicinity of the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the building managing the setup of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, as per local media.

"Authorities believe the victim was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement stated.

Surveillance tape showed a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a security uniform opening fire on Stock before running away.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but collapsed across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like spent shells, were found at the crime scene.

Appeal for Witnesses

Police have appealed members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"We know they traveled on foot after the shooting, and investigators have been following their trail to establish their destination," added an official.

His family member, a close relative, said the family was struggling to process his death.

"Words fail me. I am shattered," she stated.
"Everyone understood he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were prepared to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the community to refrain from sharing graphic images from the incident, noting this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's three sons.
