We are verifying images and video posted earlier today that show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
