EU Economic Ministers Convene to Debate Unlocking €140 Billion in Immobilized Russian Funds for Ukraine Support

European Union economic leaders are gathering in the EU capital this morning to tackle the union's financial agenda, including the pressing question of financial support to the Ukrainian government.

Ukraine's President Warns Nation's Survival Depends on Allies

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a latest interview that the country's survival depended on receiving more funds from allies.

“I hope, God bless, they will approve this decision,” he told media outlets. If not, “It will be necessary to seek another solution, it’s a question of our surviving. For this reason it is essential urgently. And I count on our allies.”

European Authorities Pushes for €140bn Compensation Funding

The European Commission continues to aim to convince participating countries – and Belgium, which is currently blocking the plan due to legal fears – to move ahead on a €140 billion financial compensation based on frozen Russian assets.

Commission president Ursula von der Leyen insisted today that this represents “the most effective way to sustain Kyiv's military and national finances.”

Resolution Postponed Till Year-End Summit

A definitive resolution on the issue has been postponed until the European Council meeting in the last month, as the financial support required at the start of the coming year.

Talks Coincide with Corruption Scandal in Ukraine

But the talks are happening during a difficult time for Kyiv, as Zelenskyy had to move to contain growing public outrage in Ukraine regarding a bribery incident in the energy sector, firing several officials who are accused of participating in a large-scale bribery scheme.

Denmark's finance leader Stephanie Lose was asked about her response to the allegations, and insisted that there was commitment to continue supporting Ukraine.

“Naturally, The country will have to continuously work with reforms, strengthening all parts of their society [and] that also applies to fighting graft … but it is clear that Europe stands firmly with Ukraine,” she said.
