Condemnation Surges as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Backlash
Personalities from across the political divide and the entertainment world are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Statement
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
This is a vile and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Party
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared members in his party to justify the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation following the killing of another individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
