California's Governor Confirms He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom stated when asked about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

Newsom's current term as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he noted that any choice is still years away.

"The future will decide," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

The California governor has come to the forefront as a prominent critic of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would boost the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about Californians in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary revealed a strategy to withhold government money from the state and threatened suspending the authority to issue trucking licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," he declared, in the wake of a recently reported fatal crash in California involving an undocumented trucker that caused fatalities and four injuries.

His administration highlighted that the federal government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a trucking license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had previously announced he was withholding additional funds from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp federal law," Newsom's office responded in a recent statement addressing the funding warnings. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Future Prospects

A recently conducted survey revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has increased to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an average of previous highs to under 40%.

In previous months, the governor stated while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.

"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, remarkable," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
